Shelving Style v’s Cabinetry

What is shelving style? How is this different to cabinetry?

After weeks (or months) of scrolling through countless images on Instagram and Pinterest for inspiration, you’ve finally reached the time where you can start bringing your wardrobe dreams to life! With so many colours, styles, textures, and configurations, it’s difficult to know where to begin!

Before you start phoning around your local wardrobe companies, it’s a good idea to have a few things worked out already. Not only will it help you feel in control and organised, it will enable you to answer the consultant’s questions with ease.

When it comes to custom-built wardrobe interiors, there are two main styles to consider – cabinetry or shelving style. Both of these options essentially perform the same function, however, there are a few key differences about how each are made. The wardrobe company’s you contact might do things a little differently, so, it’s a good idea to understand the basics before picking up the phone.

Cabinetry Style

To get you started, one question you can ask yourself is, “Do I want my wardrobe to look like my kitchen?” If the answer is, yes, then, no doubt you are looking for cabinetry. Cabinetry will give your wardrobe a streamlined, “built in” appearance. More than likely, if you flick through your inspiration gallery, it will be flooded with aesthetically beautiful, highly functional, extremely lavish wardrobe interiors fit for a queen (or Carrie Bradshaw)! Cabinetry style wardrobes are constructed with the backs on them, which hides the wall. The drawer fronts are set inside the cabinet so they sit flush with the frame, and the cabinet depth is set at around 600mm. While this may give your wardrobe a glamorous, Instaworthy look, the attached price-tag might prompt you to consider your options (like this one from The Block Shop that will set you back around $10,000).

Shelving Style

A great, cost-effective alternative is what we call “shelving style”. Shelving style is constructed with your wardrobe interior set at a depth of 450mm. This allows you to configure your wardrobe in a multitude of different ways, combining the practicality of drawers with the functionality of shelves, and the flexibility to set your hanging rails at different heights. Our wardrobe interiors image gallery showcases some beautiful examples our our shelving style wardrobes. You can also choose from our selection of wardrobe accessories, such as a jewellery drawer or pull-out mirror, to ensure your wardrobe design best uses all the available space.

Wardrobe companies may outline that you will need a wardrobe depth of 600mm to accommodate your clothes comfortably. While, essentially, this serves true as to accommodate the width of the track or hinges of your robe doors, the internal structure of wardrobe need only be at a minimum depth of 450mm.

Outlined in the table are the key differences between cabinetry and shelving style wardrobe interiors to help you understand what will work best for you.
